MID 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & " TIME " VERSE SAMPLER BY JANE BURROWS AGED 11 - C. 1845

Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Jane Burrows aged 11. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly later. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central bird standing on a blossom branch with a crown above his capped head and floral motifs, a flower basket, bird and heart to his left and right. The middle section of the linen is stitched w...ith a central plaque with a floral sprig on each of its four corners and containing the following short verse with Jane's name and age beneath

The plaque has a central floral motif on top with a bird on a tree to its left and right, whilst each side of the plaque is stitched with a bird and carnation basket which has a small flower basket and star above. There is a central floral motif below the plaque with a flower basket. squirrels, floral motifs, diamond and rose basket on each side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral urn which has a rose basket, tree, bird and fruit basket to each side, which in turn have a rosebush flanked by birds and a heart above them. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general grubbiness, moreso in the top section. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Jane first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to the field of the linen and also around the edges which also retain remnants of the sampler's original edging cloth. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 13 1/4" x 13 1/4"
