Original Description:
Mid/late 19th century needlepoint picture c.1870. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The gauze is stitched with a charming scene of a young woman sitting at her spinning wheel. She is clearly working as she is twisting the fibres with her left hand whilst her foot is working the treadle to produce yarn. This industrious scene is set within a backdrop of a stone archway covered in grapevines which have doves perched on thei...r sinuous vines.
The gauze that is visible is dark with old brown glue residue, visible tack marks and some damage and fraying. The colours of the wool are good with the purple of the grapes and the woman's dress having mellowed to a shade of blue. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. Measures 11 3/4" x 15 1/4" to the edges of the stitch work and 13 1/2" x 17" to the edges of the gauze.
