Mid/late 19th century wool work c.1870 or slightly later. Worked in wool on gauze, this wool work is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The scene is a winsome one of a rural setting with a cottage nestled amongst trees in the background with an expanse of water nearby, all contained by a picket fence which has a flowering shrub to its left side. The foreground of the gauze is stitched with a charming scene of a young barefooted mother sitting on a grassy verge with her s...miling daughter, also barefooted, leaning on her knee. The source of the child's joy is a young goat which is lying contentedly in her mother's lap, whilst the kid goat's mother standing nearby watching the happy trio. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good, with some shades not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. The last photo is of the reverse of the wool work and shows how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a very small area of damage to the gauze near the bottom right side edge and a slightly larger area to the lower left corner. The right side edge of the gauze has visible tack marks running down it from where the wool work will have been on a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. The other three edges of the gauze have been cut which has resulted in some minor fraying. PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large piece measuring 24" x 19 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
