Small early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Susanna West aged 8 - 1817. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Susanna was just eight years old when she completed it. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section is stitched with a deep carnation border which has Susanna's details and the date of 1817 beneath. The... whole piece is then surrounded by a blue chequered border edged with a line border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some minor wrinkling and a very small area of damage to the side of the X in the fourth row of letters. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Susanna first stitched it.
