When I bought this expressive antique English poured wax doll around a year ago, I shall not hide the fact that she looked so very, very sad and neglected! She was not broken, or undressed - she had on her original Victorian embroidered doll gown - yet she truly looked as if she had wearily given up on life which was heart-breaking!
I just had to buy her no matter what to make sure she would know that there are still people out here who want to be her parent or guardian and lo...ve and care for her. I smoothed her hair, laundered her crumpled, discoloured clothes and even within the space of a day, she appeared to me to have developed a brightness in her eyes and a tentative, budding confidence in her future which I hope can now grow into an unfaltering certainty that she is loved by her new owner.
She is 22 inches tall, with short, silky, wavy blonde inserted mohair hair and rather pretty, shiny blue glass eyes. She has a light beeswax tint to her wax parts which have no damages and overall condition is commensurate with age. There is an inconspicuous mould line or drip from her original moulding beneath her hair at the back of her neck, but this must have been there since she was made and is not really visible until you lift her hair.
She has a waisted cloth body with poured wax lower arms and legs; all stringing is sound. Her drop-neck long gown is a pretty, original hand-stitched antique doll gown intricately embroidered by hand and trimmed with lace, with a Victorian hand-stitched long all-in-one underslip beneath with adjustable drawstring ties at waist and neck and pin tucks to the hemline (an inch long L shaped mended tear toward one side of the skirt of the underslip, but nothing to worry too much about in my opinion) . Her bonnet is a pretty antique doll bonnet and suits her, I think.
Her maker and her history are a mystery to me - and maybe there is some of that history she'd rather forget! - but I hope now someone has been looking for an English poured wax on the dolly market and she is 'the one'.
