The Chocó region of NW Colombia is perhaps the richest area in the world when it comes to aroid diversity. I've lost track of the number of gorgeous aroids that originate here - it's just astonishing. One of the most distinctive is Anthurium splendidum, a compact-growing species with rough-textured leaves that is quite rare in cultivation. For years, A. splendidum had the reputation of being nearly impossible to grow successfully, due in part to its requirement for very high humi...dity in order to thrive. The recent popularity of terrariums seems tailor-made for this species, and I've found that it grows quite well in a terrarium with consistently high humidity and moderate light levels. Plants are still difficult to find and usually quite expensive, but a well-grown plant will be the star of any collection!Anthurium splendidum occurs in NW Colombia at elevations of ~800-1200 feet, and requires warm temperatures and high humidity to thrive. I provide daytime temperatures in the 80's with nighttime lows in the low to mid-60's. This species grows well in a potting mix that holds moisture and also has some air space for the fuzzy roots to wander. I use loosely packed sphagnum moss, which seems to work very well.Here's a chance to own a rare and fantastic Anthurium!
