From time to time, I encounter an aroid that really makes an impression. I remember the first time I saw Anthurium salgarense on a trip to Colombia in 2011. The enormous leaves and brightly colored veins stopped me in my tracks. This uncommon species is just starting to become available, but plants are difficult to find and usually quite expensive. Even major botanical gardens don't have this species! A word of cautio...n: A. salgarense requires space to grow. A mature specimen can be over seven feet tall with four foot leaves. It prefers cooler temperatures at night but can tolerate a certain amount of heat during the day. This species grows well in a potting mix that holds moisture but doesn't stay too soggy. I use loosely packed sphagnum moss or a basic soil-less mix with extra perlite to make the consistency spongier and improve drainage.This is a great opportunity to own a really spectacular Anthurium!
