Original Description:
Very Rare and original, July 3rd 1777 fully manuscript Revolutionary War Payment Voucher to “Captain Daniel Skinner” from the State of Connecticut “for his entertainment of the Governor at the Election and thru the May Session”. The Document is signed by a Jabez Hamlin and Seth Williams and there is a notation and signature in the hand of Captain Daniel Skinner.
This fascinating Document measures approx. 7 3/4” by 4 1/4” and is dated July 3rd, 177...7. nearly the one year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was issued by Jabez Hamlin who appears to be an Assistant of the Treasurer of the State of Connecticut in the amount of “Eight Pounds Ten Shillings Lawful Money” and paid to Captain Daniel Skinner. The Document is addressed to “John Lawrence Esq. Treasr. Of the State of Connecticut” and payment was made on the same day this Document was issued. The back of the Document is countersigned “Recd, July 3rd 1777 fo Treasurer Lawrence Eight pounds Ten Shillings La. Money the contents. (signed)Capt. Daniel Skinner”.
We believe that Captain Daniel Skinner was a prominent citizen of Colchester, Connecticut however we have been unable to definitively identify him as a number of persons named “Daniel Skinner” served during the Revolutionary War. For the second time in its history, the State of Connecticut held elections for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the newly formed State. While we were unable to find records of how Captain Daniel Skinner served then Governor John Trumbull and this fascinating, Revolutionary War Document is certainly deserving of further research.
