MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY SARAH BRADLEY AGED 13 1851

Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Sarah Bradley aged 13 - 1851. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central floral edged plaque containing the following short verse with a fruit basket on either side and Sarah's details and the date of 1851 beneath

The middle and lower sections of the linen are stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. There is an angel hovering on either side of the Tree's topmost branches, each with a floral swag above with a flower, star, bird and fruit tree by the angel on the left and a bird, star and flower basket by the angel on the right. Adam and Eve both have a crown above their head and a stag standing at their side, a heart above each. Adam has a tall flower basket plus bird at his side with an open tailed peacock standing nearby who has a butterfly above, whilst the flower basket has a bird and floral motif to each side of its topmost bloom. Eve has a floral urn plus bird at her side with a peahen standing nearby who has a butterfly above, whilst each side of the floral urn has a flower and tree to each side of its topmost bloom. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow geometric border which in turn is surrounded by a deep strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss and bleeding to the black thread used for the words. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small amount of damage to the top left corner of the linen plus remnants of old paper and glue residue around the edges from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. There are some areas where the glue and paper is thicker and has made the linen quite rigid. Measures 20 3/4" x 16 1/2"
I AM ALSO SELLING ANOTHER, SMALLER SAMPLER BY SARAH WHICH SHE COMPLETED IN 1848 PLUS ANOTHER BY BESSY BRADLEY COMPLETED IN 1849 WHEN SHE WAS TWELVE YEARS OLD. THIS LATER SAMPLER BY SARAH AND BESSY'S ARE SIMILAR IN DESIGN SO I THINK IT IS LIKELY THE GIRLS WERE SISTERS.
