MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ANNE PHILLIPS - 1869

Mid 19th century sampler by Anne Phillips aged 15 - 1869. Worked in wool on even weave gauze this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central red crown which has a dog and star to its left and right and a flower basket beneath flanked by floral urn, each with a bird on top, then followed by a large flower bowl. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, comple...te with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches, each figure with their identifying initial beside them. Adam and Eve have a flower basket, prancing stag and fruit tree plus bird at their side, whilst the foliage of the Tree is flanked by a white stag and a cherub bearing a bow and arrow. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central triangulated framework which contains the following verse, Anne's details and the date of 1869 which has a dog and floral motif to each side

The framework has two flower bowls on each side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep meandering floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, and the colours of the wool are good with some shades not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Anne first stitched it.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 26 3/4" across x 26 1/2"
