MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARIA SCRUTON - 1843

Mid 19th century sampler by Maria Scruton aged 14 - 1843. Worked in wool on a close weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central floral motif flanked by a flower basket, dog, stag and two floral urns. There is a star motif to each side of the central floral motif's topmost blooms and a butterfly above each stag. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Life, co...mplete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure has their name by their inner side, a crown above each, whilst their outer side has a crown and flower basket nearby. The lower branches of the Tree have a lozenge motif and butterfly to their left and right, whilst the upper foliage has a parrot perched on a flower and a hovering cherub to each side, each cherub holding a flower. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a meandering floral border with the following verse beneath, a flower basket and floral urn on each side

Maria's details and the date of A.D.1843 are stitched across the bottom edge then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some patches of old glue residue around the edges. The colours of the wool are good with some minor bleeding to areas of the darker stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Maria first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some slight fraying.Measures 19 1/4" across x 19"
