Continental Army Connecticut Line Bond -No. 4993- Issued 1782 - (ONE BOND ONLY)REVOLUTIONARY WAR BONDThe Revolutionary War was the most significant event in America's early history. Fought between the 13 American colonies and Great Britain, it stated on April19, 1775 at the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. George Washington took command of the Continental Army on July 2, 1775, and the states declared their independence from Britain on July 4, 1776. The... war officially ended in the Americans' favor with the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783. During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress required each state to provide an assigned number of soldiers for the Continental Army. Connecticut provided 27 infantry regiments during the war; together, the regiments were known as the Connecticut Line Regiments from the Connecticut Line took part in many of the major battles of the war and played a key role in the United States winning its independence. The financial pressures of the war meant that Connecticut in the early 1780's was unable to pay its Revolutionary War soldiers in full. Instead, it issued bonds that were hand-signed by the Treasurer of the State of Connecticut. Each bond was filled out by hand, including the soldier's name and the amount he was owed. Bonds were denominated in Connecticut pounds, shillings and pence. The Connecticut pound remained the official currency of Connecticut until 1793, when the newly established United States dollar took its place.Bonds were hand-cut irregularly from the stub, which was kept by the state. When the soldier redeemed his bond, it had to match both the serial number and the pattern of the unique cut. According to the obligation on the bond, he was paid in gold, silver or bills of credit. This GENUINE REVOLUTIONARY WAR bond was issued to Soldier James Frances who was serving in the Connecticut Line of the Connecticut Army. It was sold by this soldier upon redemption and hole-cancelled by the state.
