An original rough draft of a manuscript letter, written and initialed by Connecticut Comptroller JOHN PORTER, regarding a mistake made in ascertaining the losses to property "sustained from an incursion of the British troops in time of the War", possibly referring to the burning of New London by troops under command of the traitor Benedict Arnold. Needs further research. The letter is dated the Comptroller's Office, June 18, 1797, and addressed to Andrew Rowland, [State's Attorney for ...Fairfield County], asking him to pursue the matter......JOHN PORTER [1757-1806] of Lebanon, Connecticut was a graduate of Yale, and a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He served as the 5th Comptroller of the State of Connecticut from 1793-1806, in charge of all the financial matters of the State.......One page, size 7 1/4" x 9", folds, early rag paper, docketed on reverse, very good condition.......A nice rare autographed letter of an early American financial officer.......Guaranteed original.......$5.00  shipping............
