                                                                                BATTLE OF GUILFORD COURTHOUSE                                                                                          REVOLUTIONARY WAR                                                                                                4POUNDER UP FOR SALE IS A 4 POUNDER CANNON BALL FROM THE BATTLE OF GUILFORD COURTHOUSE, NORTH CAROLINA. IT IS 3.O2 INCH DIAMETER AND WEIGHS 3 LB. 12 OZ.. THE WEIGHT AND SIZE MATCH PERFECTLY FOR A 4 POUNDER CANNON BALL. IT SHOWS EVIDENCE OF A MOLD SEAM AND A NICE BROWNISH PATINA WITH SOME LITE PITTING AND A SPRU MARK FROM THE CASTING PROCESS. THESE WERE FOUND ABOUT 11 YEARS AGO WITH ABOUT 200 OTHER 4 POUNDER BALLS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY WITH OWNER PERMISSION, IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO COLSEN'S SUPPLY DEPOT. THEY WERE ALL FOUND TOGETHER AND WERE APPARANTLY LEFT THERE BY NATHANIEL GREEN'S ARMY. THIS ONE IS MILDLY PITTED AND SHOWS A NICE BROWNISH PATINA. PHOTO'S OF THE CANNON BALL GROUPING WERE PROVIDED BY THE DIGGER YEARS AGO. PHOTO SHOWS ONLY 3 OF THE LARGER 6 POUNDER BALLS IN THE BACKGROUND IN PHOTO 12.
THE BATTLE OF GUILFORD'S COURTHOUSE WAS FOUGHT BETWEEN NATHANIEL GREEN AND LORD CORNWALLIS IN 1781. ALTHOUGH GREEN WAS DRIVEN BACK, BECAUSE OF THE RESISTANCE DISPLAYED BY THE COLONIST, IT CAUSED CORNWALLIS TO RETREAT BACK TO YORKTOWN WHERE HE WAS EVENTUALLY DEFEATED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON'S ARMY. THIS ENDED BRITTISH CONTROL OF THE STATES. THIS COMES WITH A REAL GLASS ENCLOSED DISPLAY CASE WITH A BRASS ID TAG STATING: CANNON BALL, REVOLUTIONERY WAR.
