While inHartford he was also the First Chief of the volunteer fire company, from1789-1805. He was an original member of the Connecticut Society of theCincinnati; founder and Major of the Governor's Horse Guards. Heraised a company of cavalry, was Captain of Dragoons (2nd Continental Regiment) andafterwards a regiment of light horse, and served throughout the Revolutionarywar. After the surrender ofBurgoyne, he was selected by Revolutionary War General Gates to escort thecaptive general to Boston, and performed this delicate duty so much toBurgoyne's satisfaction that at the end of the trip he presented him with amagnificent saddle and leopard skin saddle cloth and a brace pair of silvermounted pistols, as a token of appreciation of the manner in which he performedhis duties. Major Seymour always tookpleasure in using them when in command of the Governor's Horse Guards. He married, 1st his cousin, Mary Ann, daughter of Colonel WilliamLedyard, the hero of Fort Groton; she died in Hartford, in March 9, 1782, aged 19, and is buried in the Center Church graveyard. He married, 2nd, Susan Bull, of Hartford, October 3, 1784, He became insane before his death, which occurred May 16, 1811.
