Original Description:
This is a wonderful, original document, dated 1778, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where the estate of (Colonel) Robert Callender is requesting payment of the use of a Brick building and two lots...requested by Samuel Sargent to be paid by Major Charles Lukensat the Carlisle barracks.....signed at lower right by Robert Callender's widow, Frances Callender as having received the funds. Document is 6x8, toned, else in overall good condition.Robert Callender (1726-1776) was one of the most exten...sive Indian traders in his day. He was one of twenty-three who suffered in the Bloody River affair losing all of his goods. He was captain in the Provincial Army in 1756-57 and received a land grant. He was a Colonel and Patriot in the American Revolutionary War, and a Member of the Committee of Observation.Francis Callender born circa 1743, probably the daughter of George Gibson and Martha nee "Deveney, " and sister of Col John Gibson, Frances Gibson married widower Robert Callender 11 March 1766. After his death, she married James R. Reed circa 1770s. Because Mrs. Reed's name appeared in the will abstract at her son's death in 1802, it is suggested that she died sometime after 1802.During the Revolutionary  war, numerous substantial brick buildings were erected at Carlisle Barracks for military stores and to accommodate workmen of the revolutionary government's dedicated managing body for the Army, the Ordnance Department. While the facility might have been used to store ammunition and explosives, its lack of access to water transportation made it impractical because of the difficulty of overland travel. The Hessian Powder Magazine, now Hessian Guardhouse Museum, was built in 1777.Please view the other historical and Civil War related documents I'll be listing this week.SEE SCAN.I now accept PAYPAL but PREFER other forms of traditional paper payment.
