VIRGINIA NAVALCUTLASS, VIRGINIA NAVY GALLEY ACCOMAC, 1777 – 1780This German navalcutlass was used by Boatswains Mate Isaac Waters when he served on board theVirginia Navy galley Accomac*1 from October 1777 to July 1780.                                             ...;                                                                         This is a very heavy & rathercrudely made cutlass, is 29 1/8” long that has about ¾” of the tip broken offwith a 22 ¾” x  1 1/4” curved blade.                                Thecircular iron guard has the left side cut off so it could be used by a lefthanded man & rest comfortably against his side. The iron pommel cap ispierced through & peened on the square tang & the grip is wood that waspainted a dark gray color.                                                                                                                           It is in good& very well used condition with the blade, guard & pommel cap havelight to light/medium pitting & a dark brown patina & the grip is fullyintact & still has about 50% of the paint remaining.                                                                    SeeGeorge C. Neumann’s very fine book Swords & Blades of the AmericanRevolution, page 185, figure 370S for a cutlass  similar to this one (but without a lower arm).                                                                                                                             He helped Captain John Harrisscuttle the ship at Metopkin Inlet on the eastern shore of Virginia after the crewdeserted in July, 1780 to keep it from falling into British hands.                                                       *1The Accomac was a galleytype of ship (with long row oars), was 75’ long with a 27‘ beam & was armedwith four 24 pounder cannon, 2 at the bow & 2 at the stern with twelve 9pounder cannons, six to each side.
