EARLY 19TH CENTURY ALPHABET & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH MORTON - 1832
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:77034 |
Jesus permit thy gracious name to standAs the first effo...rts of an infant's handAnd while her fingers o'er this canvas moveEngage her tender heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear children let her share a partAnd write thy name thyself upon her heartElizabeth Morton
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby in places with some patches of staining and a few small dark marks. The lower right quadrant is darker than the other three, presumably as a result of the sampler having been folded in four for many years. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are several small areas of damage to the linen. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 12 1/2" x 12 1/2"
