This is an amazing example of a beautiful 18th Century Powderhorn. This is an original horn from the era, not a reproduction.
The horn measures roughly 12" long if measured straight across. The horn is in excellent condition with no cracks or breaks that I can find. The spout is made of turned bone or antler, with removable spout for filling. This historic horn was purchased at the estate of a collector of Colonial and Early American artifacts. This horn I was told was procured orig...inally in Pennsylvania. The style and construction is consistent with a horn made during or shortly after the American Revolutionary War.
There doesn't seem to be any scrimshaw on the horn other than the faint initials "T.R.".
The carving on the turned base plug is amazing, with subtle roped border and wooden button strap anchor.
