Up for sale here is a nice antique, art Nouveau style , carved solid Mahogany relief sculpture depicting a portrait of a child. It was carved by American monument maker and sculptor Frederic J. Clasgens (1879-1955) The wood sculpture was placed in an antique, repurposed frame to fit it. The sculpture is quite large and measures about 16 1/2 inches in diameter. The total size with the frame comes to 24 inches by 24 inches. The sculpture is signed by the artist and dated 1900 in th...e lower right. As for condition. The sculpture is in very good condition with no restorations. The frame looks like it was broken, repaired and repainted quite some time ago. Frederic Clasgens is listed in the published art books Davenports Art Reference and Price Guide, Who Was Who in American Art, Daniel Mallets' 1948 book Mallets which lists artists and their exhibition. Frederic Clasgens spent the early part of his career in the Cincinnati , Ohio region then later traveled to and lived in Paris, France studying under and working with famous sculptor Auguste Rene Rodin. He later came back to the United States and settled in Wisconsin. He was a commissioned sculptor and is best known for his monumental marble sculpture of the Annie Stewart Memorial near the old Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin which he completed back in 1925. He died in 1955 in Wisconsin. Not many of his works are available for sale and for the most part other than his still standing monument has been mostly forgotten. However, his connection to the master sculptor Rodin and left a great impression of quality in the artists work. Thank you very much for checking out our ebay store.
