Mid 19th century sampler by Mary Jane Kenworth aged 9. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a standing at the end of the last row. Hannah's details are stitched in the middle section of the gauze with a row of alphabet le...tters beneath, a butterfly to their right side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with the following verse which as a central flower basket beneath flanked by a carnation motif and red house

The gauze has overall, quite dark discolouration consistent with its age with general grubbiness and some patches of staining. There is also a small area of damage in Mary Jane's first name. The colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Jane first stitched it.Measures 15 3/4" x 17"
