Mid 19th century sampler by Salome Hitchcock - 1842. Worked in wool on a soft cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section contains the following verse underlined with a Greek key border which has Salome's name and the date of December 22 1842 beneath

The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a small stain just above the I in the penultimate row of letters. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Salome first stitched it. Measures 17 1/4" x 15"
