Town (indicting Charleston, South Carolina)....bound for Some Port in New England agreeable to the Charty Party....Dated in Charles Town 10th Febru'y 1779 / Daniel Bigelow / Sold by William Shenton at the Boar's Head in Cornhill, London."The term "charty party" is a colloquialism, in use at the time, for a contract between a ship owner and one who charters the ship for transport of cargo or passengers. The Charming Polly was subsequently captured by American naval captain John Paul Jones, probably shortly before he took command of the the famous Bon Homme Richard, and along with two other ships, the Betsey and the Union, was sailed to Bergen, Norway (then in union with Denmark), where Jones attempted to claim compensation for the prizes, with the assistance of Benjamin Franklin, who was then the American ambassador to France.  But apparently, even after writing to Thomas Jefferson, then serving as United States minister to France, he was unsuccessful in gaining compensation.  But upon execution of Jones's will in 1792, the prize money was awarded to his family.CONDITIONOverall excellent.  Has the expected age darkening and toning.  AN IMPORTANT AND HISTORICAL REVOLUTIONARY WAR MARITIME DOCUMENT.All items shipped USPS priority mail unless otherwise noted.
