EARLY 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE & DOUBLE HOUSE SAMPLER BY MARYANN HARRISON - 1836

Early 19th century sampler by Maryann Harrison aged 10 - 1836. Worked in silk on a soft cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower basket with a bird on top with two fruit baskets above and a rose bush on either side. Each rose bush then has an impressive three storey house by their side with a lawned area to the front and a dog chained to the wall, a tulip at their side. T...he middle section of the gauze is stitched with Maryann's details and the following short verse which has two trees to its left and right

The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower basket which has a tulip, bird and flowers on either side and trees and flowers above. There is a Tree of Knowledge beneath the central flower basket, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing to its left and right, a small dog at their side. Each figure then has another dog, carnation basket and flower basket by their side. The whole piece is then surrounded by an acorn border which in turn is followed by a zigzag border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some brown staining in all but the lower right corner area. There is also some fainter staining running through the verse and some creasing. The colours of the silks are good with some bleeding to areas of the green stitch work, the black of the words, and some smaller areas elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Maryann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is some damage to the gauze in the upper corners which has resulted in some stitch loss to the outer borders. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 17" x 15 1/4"
