This document dated June 26, 1775 is a pay order to Captain Nathaniel Barnes as commander of a company in military service....signed at bottom by Benjamin Payne and Oliver Ellswort and on back by Moses Foot for Captain Barnes. Document is 6x8, overall very good condition. This appears to be a payorder for Waterbury, Connecticut troops, they served in the Siege of Boston during this period.Oliver Ellsworth (April 29, 1745 – November 26, 1807) was an American lawyer, judge, p...olitician, and diplomat. He was a framer of the United States Constitution, a United States Senator from Connecticut, and the third Chief Justice of the United States. Additionally, Ellsworth received 11 electoral votes in the 1796 presidential election. Benjamin Payne,  of Hartford, was educated for the bar, and was admitted to practice in 1762. He was a deputy to the General Assembly and clerk of the House, a very active member of the Council of Safety, and Judge of Probate. He died in 1782. Nathaniel Barnes (1707 - 1798), Waterbury,  Captain 10th Conn. Militia.In March, 1775, Moses Foot of the Northbury parish of Waterbury, Connecticut, with other inhabitants, informed the Assembly that they had with great care and expense applied themselves to the use of arms and the art of war, and prayed to be constituted a military company. In April, 1775, (the next month), Joseph Garnsey of the Westbury parish appeared with the same request. The Assembly made answer by commissioning Capt. Jesse Curtiss, Lieut. Moses Foot, Ens. Roger Conant, officers of the Northbury company, which became the 18th company; and by commissioning Capt. Joseph Garnsey, Lieut. Jonathan Roberts, Ens.
