HESSIAN ARTILLERYFLINT & STRIKER, KING STREET, BATTLE OF TRENTON, 1776This very rare here in America Hessianflint & large iron striker was found at the site where there were a pair ofHessian 3 pounder cannons that had been set up in the back yard of the DonaldHouse on King Street during the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776. TheHessian Knyphausen Regiment had set up these 3 pounder cannons that was firingat the Am...ericans advancing down King Street & were disabled by the Americanartillery & the Hessian cannons along with their crews were captured. This iron striker is muchlarger, thicker & heavier that contemporary French, American or Britishstrikers being 3 3/8” x 1 7/8” with both curled tops joined together. Itis in good & well used condition with light/medium to medium pitting & hasa dark brown patina. The dark gray flint is also much thicker & heavier, 1 1/16” x 1 1/8”& 7/8” thick, is nearly square rather that rectangular unlike other flints & shows a lot of use. This This flint & striker were found along with several Hessian 3 pounder & American4 & 6 pounder cannonballs when the house was torn down in 1934/1935. Itis part of the Donald House Collection that has been passed down through theDonald family. Itcomes with a Donald family collection letter & acertificate of authenticity.
