Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Rebecca Blyth Rawlin aged 12 - 1833. This sampler is just stunning with very fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a deep carnation border with a central floral motif beneath contained within two arched flowers then flanked by a fruit basket and floral motif. There is a central fruit basket beneath the verse which has a squirrel, tall bell flower, bird and fruit bush with a bird on top to its left and right with a row of trees, deer and dogs beneath. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep exquisitely stitched floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a couple of very small areas of damage in the red flowers to the left of the verse - another in the lower left corner - a split to the right of Rebecca's age - another above her surname - another below the trees and dogs on the right side of the row of motifs - a much smaller split just above the last tree in that row and a larger split running alongside the flowers on the lower right side border. One is able to see within these damaged areas that the sampler has been placed on a clean backing cloth at some point of time. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There are a few loose strands of silk within the top flower in the upper left corner of the floral border. The sampler is contained within an ebonised frame, possibly its original, which has scratches, scuff marks and paint loss to its slip commensurate with its age.Measures 12 3/4" across x 12 1/4" (sight size) and 15" x 14 1/2"
